Bible Garden
Bethany Lutheran Church at Green Lake is proud to share with members and passers-by its garden with ‘Biblical plants’.
On the west side of the building, on Woodlawn Avenue NE, is a raised planter bed, 8 x 33 feet. All of the plants there are plants that are mentioned in the Bible. Finding flora that can grow in the Pacific Northwest as well as in Palestine is a modest challenge. There are 133 plants mentioned in the Bible. Currently Bethany has about 15 plants that qualify. There are cypress, olive trees, roses, flax and, of course, apple trees. The columnar apple trees are bearing fruit, as is the fig tree, espaliered against the south wall. All are perennial and chosen for easy care and maintenance. On the reader case next to the offices and garden there is a diagram of where each plant is, its name and biblical reference. You may download it here (.pdf file).
Some liberty has been taken. There is a local bush that is green all summer then in the fall becomes first yellow and then a true red. Its local name is “burning bush”. Seems enough to qualify for our garden.
Flowers and leaves in the garden are colorful year round.
Stop by and have a look.
